800 dogs found on property northwest of Tucson

800 dogs have been seized from what an official called a "small puppy mill" in Avra Valley. Most of the dogs are chihuahuas and some are very ill, said Jenny Rose, a spokeswoman for the Humane Society of Southern Arizona. Three were found dead on the property.

Authorities became aware of the hoarding case after a woman who purchased a dog from a couple who lives on the property took her dog to the vet because it had kennel cough, Rose said. She told the vet that there were hundreds of dogs on the property, located in the 12200 block of West Manville Road, and the vet advised that she contact authorities.

When the Pima County Sheriff's Department responded to the property, they found the dogs in cages outside and also found dogs inside the house, said Sgt. James Ogden, an agency spokesman.

"The conditions of the house were horrible," Ogden said. They also found about 80 exotic birds, Rose said. On Monday, 96 animals from the property were taken in by the Humane Society, Rose said. Authorities returned to the home on Wednesday where they worked all day to bring in the remaining dogs. No citations have been issued and the couple, who is in their 60s, have been cooperating with the Sheriff's Department, Ogden said.

Once the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Pima County Attorney's Office for review.

How to help:

To donate to help the surge of animals at the Humane Society of Arizona, go to www.hssaz.org or call the shelter at 327-6088.

This Black and Tan Standard Dachshund, was picked up by a local pound in Phoenix. He had been tied outside in the desert sun with no shade. Bernie suffered third degree burns from the back of his neck to the start of his tail. He had to go through painful daily treatments for about 5 months before his wounds were healed. Bernie had to tolerate an e-collar for the duration of those 5 months. When he finally got his cone off he was like a new dog! Luckily here in Arizona, TIE OUTS are ILLEGAL. We still battle the task of educating the public about heat stoke, burns, and dehydration. These types of burns have been seen mostly with smooth coat dogs.

Bernie did very well with his long-term care and rehabilitation. He fully recovered and the hair grew back to cover most of his scars. Due to his trauma some of the black hair grew back in white. We rely on your donations in order to be able to rehab little guys like Bernie who need long term care.

Please consider becoming Sponsors for a needy NOT SO GRANDE Dachshund or small dog. There are many ways in which you can help a dog that otherwise would have no where to go. Sponsors can help with the recovery, rehab, and the comfort of a Down Dachshund or needy small breed rescue dog. A cage bank will make it much easier to handle the task of treating the sick and down dogs..

Update on Bernie: He was adopted by Mike and has fully recovered from his awful experience. His hair has grown back in and does cover most of his deep scars.

Thanks for your support.

Charlie

This is Charlie, a sweet Wire Haired Mini Dachshund, he was rescued with two other Dachshunds in Northern Arizona. They where left tied outside in the weather where he contracted an eye infection. When Charlie arrived, he had been wearing the same sweater for some time. His hair was matted, and he was full of fleas. His eye was so badly infected that it was closed shut. After a lot of care and medications Charlie could finally see again! Such a Cutie. After all he had been through his personality is wonderful. We held out for some one that would love and adopt both Charlie and Peppermint Patti. Peppermint and Charlie had grown up together and always had each other to lean on. She is a loving and friendly Red Long Hair Mini Dachshund. The two are a great pair, they would eat, sleep and play together.

This is Charlie, he was rescued with two other Dachshunds in northern AZ. They where left tied outside in the weather, where he contracted an eye infection.

This eye problem was a direct result of the dog's environment not being suitable. Charlie, being tied out was unable to get away from the flies and fleas that were out of control.

The insects had laid their eggs in Charlie's eye, which became infected."[If left] untreated this would have led to blindness". We were extremely happy when our rehabilitation efforts paid off and he could see again. See the adoption photo where both of his eyes are shiny and black.

When he arrived here he was tick and flea infested. He also had bilaterally crypt orchid's [a condition in which the testicles never drop],if left untreated this will lead to testicular cancer! Once he had good weight on and was healthy enough we had him neutered, poor guy was so bruised and sore. What a trooper! Even with all of this going on with him he always had a kiss and some love to give you.

Like Bernie and Charlie we will always help these hard luck cases. Dogs needing long-term care and rehabilitation will always benefit from Sponsors and a cage bank where he can be comfortable during his treatment.

Update on the two Dachshund's: Charlie and Peppermint Patti were adopted together and are currently being spoiled and living a great life. The life all Dachshund's, and dogs deserve.

Thanks!
